Luka Doncic and Dallas Mavericks Coach Praise Rookies

Luka Doncic and Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd have expressed admiration for the dedication and receptiveness of rookies Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper during early training camp sessions. The rookies, Lively II and Prosper, have wasted no time in creating an air of optimism about their potential in their debut season. In scrimmages held on Wednesday, both players had the opportunity to perform with the starting lineup, raising hopes of significant contributions during the season.

Luka Doncic and Dallas Mavericks Coach Praises Mavs Rookies

Coach Jason Kidd stated on Wednesday, “We’ll begin with these two rookies playing alongside the core group, and later we’ll make some adjustments involving Josh Green.”

Since August, Lively and Prosper have tirelessly honed their skills at the Mavericks’ practice facility. Their strong work ethic and grasp of the team’s objectives have left a positive impression on the coaching staff.

“They’ve diligently met our expectations,” Kidd remarked. “Lively, in particular, has shown remarkable growth since August. Playing alongside Luka in pickup games has generated excitement around their partnership.”

Following Wednesday’s practice, Doncic also commended both rookies, singling out his promising chemistry with Lively. Given the significance of pick-and-roll plays in the Mavericks’ offense, Doncic’s enthusiasm for Lively’s potential bodes well.

Doncic stated, “Both rookies have been outstanding so far. We’ve played two pickup games, and they performed exceptionally well. Lively, in particular, follows instructions impressively.”

Based on Kidd’s early observations, there’s a strong possibility that either Lively or Prosper could secure a starting role early in the season. Kidd wants to assess how they fare alongside Doncic, Irving, and Williams before making a final decision.

“I believe O-Max, D-Live, and the others have put in tremendous effort,” Kidd affirmed. “One of them will likely start. I want to see how they adapt to playing with Kai, Luka, and Grant, and so far, things are looking good.”

Kidd isn’t overly concerned about the potential downsides of relying on young talent. He views the presence of Doncic, Irving, and other veteran role players as valuable assets in expediting the rookies’ adjustment to the demands of the NBA.

“I consider it an ideal situation,” Kidd remarked. “Having the luxury of Luka and Kai, two of the league’s best, along with players like Tim Hardaway Jr. and Grant Williams—experienced individuals who can guide the young core.”

Following a lackluster season at the center position, Lively offers a potential long-term solution and could make an immediate impact. Standing at 7-foot-1 with a 7-foot-7 wingspan and agility, he possesses the attributes needed to execute the team’s Channel 1 ball screen coverage effectively, a task limited by players like Dwight Powell and Richaun Holmes due to physical limitations. Lively can contest pull-up shots and switch when required.

Kidd noted, “His ability to grasp different defensive strategies, especially the Channel 1s, and his capacity to guard the ball on the perimeter as a seven-footer gives us more flexibility to switch. I trust him to defend without giving up three-pointers.”

Doncic foresees Coach Jason Kidd offering playing time to the Mavericks’ rookies if they continue to demonstrate diligence. He is encouraged by Lively and Prosper’s willingness to receive coaching and leadership.

“If they work hard, they’ll definitely get playing time,” Doncic affirmed. “Jason will give them a chance, and from what I’ve seen so far, they both compete admirably. I haven’t seen much yet, but it’s been great. They’re receptive, and that’s all you need.”

The initial opportunity for the Mavericks’ rookies to showcase their impact will come in the first few preseason games on October 5th and 7th against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Abu Dhabi.
