Boston Celtics Appoint Jeff Van Gundy as Senior Consultant

The Boston Celtics have brought on Jeff Van Gundy, the former NBA head coach and ESPN analyst, to serve as a senior consultant within their basketball operations department.

Jeff Van Gundy, aged 61, parted ways with ESPN as part of a cost-saving measure in late June, concluding his 16-year tenure with the network. During his coaching career spanning 11 NBA seasons, he achieved a record of 430 wins and 318 losses while leading the New York Knicks from 1995 to 2002 and the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2007.

His teams maintained a playoff record of 44-44, and in 1999, he steered the Knicks to the Eastern Conference championship. However, they were ultimately defeated by the San Antonio Spurs in five games, who secured the NBA title.

Celtics’ coach Joe Mazzulla expressed his enthusiasm for the hiring, referring to it as “awesome.”

Mazzulla stated, “Any time you get to add like high-character, high-level, professional people, I think it’s a no-brainer and so fortunate enough that he’s here, not just for the coaching staff, but for everybody,”

Van Gundy will divide his time between Boston and Maine, which is home to the Celtics’ G League affiliate, as reported by MassLive.
