2024 WNBA Free Agency Preview: Notable Players and Key Details

The forthcoming 2024 WNBA Free Agency offseason is gearing up for an eventful free agency period slated to commence later this month, sparking anticipation and speculation among fans and franchises alike. Beginning January 21st, teams can engage in discussions with players, but official signings remain prohibited until February 1st. This transition marks a pivotal shift in the league’s landscape, with free agency emerging as a pivotal component following the 2020 collective bargaining agreement overhaul.

Unlike previous years, where free agency held minimal significance due to contractual terms and core designations, the revamped agreement now mirrors the operational framework of other major leagues. This season’s free agency features an impressive lineup of superstars, headlined by former MVPs Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, Elena Delle Donne, Nneka Ogwumike, and Candace Parker. The roster also boasts renowned talents like Skylar Diggins-Smith, Brittney Griner, and Satou Sabally, signaling an impending league transformation.

Key details to note encompass the free agency commencement on January 21st, yet formal signings can only occur starting February 1st. The WNBA’s free agency structure mirrors the NBA, categorizing players into unrestricted and restricted free agents, delineating their negotiation rights and potential matching offers by prior teams. Additionally, the league reserves a special category for players with less than three years of service, granting exclusive negotiating rights to their previous team.

The core designation, analogous to the NFL’s franchise tag, holds significant weight, affording exclusive negotiating privileges to teams. However, judicious use is mandated as each player can only be “cored” twice as of 2024. Notably, instances of player contract expiration during suspensions result in a “suspended-contract expired” status, where teams possess rights akin to those of reserved players, albeit without the obligation to extend a qualifying offer.

As the 2024 WNBA Free Agency period nears, anticipation swells regarding potential team movements and player acquisitions, promising a transformative winter for the league.
