RJ Barrett: The Big Apple's Son Finds Home in the North

In a recent interview with the press, RJ Barrett opened up about the surprising turn of events that led him from the bustling streets of New York to the familiar embrace of his hometown in Toronto. The 23-year-old expressed his initial shock upon learning about the trade but found solace in the fact that he was heading back home.

Joyful Homecoming: Toronto, a Familiar Territory

“I had no clue,” Barrett revealed. “I was so confused. When he (agent Bill Duffy) told me the Raptors, I was like, ‘OK, at least I’m coming home.’” Born and raised in Toronto, Barrett not only returns to his roots but also to the team he passionately cheered for since childhood.

Smooth Transition: Flourishing in Toronto

Since donning the Raptors jersey, RJ Barrett has been on fire, showcasing his skills with an average of 21 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3 assists in six games. Despite the swift transition, Barrett emphasizes the learning curve, especially on the defensive end, as he strives to adapt to his new team’s system.

“I’ve felt good since game one, personally, offensively,” he shared. “I’ve been feeling like I’ve been playing very well. A lot of learning going on, still learning the defensive system, trying to get better at that every day.”

Building a Legacy: Leaving a Mark in New York

Drafted by the Knicks in 2019, Barrett spent four and a half years in New York, leaving behind a transformed team. Reflecting on his time in the Big Apple, he stated, “I helped build something in New York. When I came there we weren’t good. I left it a lot better than when it started. Those 4½ years, I will never forget.”

Dream Come True: Wearing the Raptors Jersey

Barrett, who signed a lucrative rookie scale extension with the Knicks, confessed that returning to Toronto and playing for the Raptors was a dream come true. His joy was compounded by the news that his compatriot, Immanuel Quickley, would also join the Raptors, creating a sense of excitement and gratitude.

“My initial reaction was like, ‘what’s going on?’ I just woke up to it,” Barrett shared. “I was immediately happy. I grew up a Raptors fan all my life. So to come here and put this jersey on, it’s going to be great.”

A Canadian Duo: Barrett and Quickley’s Arrival

In a significant trade, the Raptors acquired not only Barrett but also Immanuel Quickley. Barrett expressed his happiness about the opportunity, saying, “There’s so many things I want to say, but it just sums up to being thankful to God for this opportunity. To be traded but then come here, come home, it’s a great feeling.”

As the Canadian stars return home, the Toronto franchise welcomes them with open arms, setting the stage for a new chapter in their basketball journey.
