Portland Trail Blazers Plan to Protest Controversial Ending Against Oklahoma City Thunder

The Portland Trail Blazers are set to challenge the outcome of their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, marking one of the season’s most peculiar endings. The team intends to submit a protest to the NBA following their 111-109 loss on Tuesday. The focal point of the protest revolves around a critical sequence where head coach Chauncey Billups received two technical fouls after an unsuccessful attempt to call a timeout.

The incident unfolded with less than 20 seconds remaining, with the Blazers holding a slim 109-108 lead. Guard Malcolm Brogdon found himself trapped near halfcourt, prompting Billups to call a timeout. However, the official, Brandon Schwab, only noticed the attempt after Brogdon’s double-dribble violation had been called, leading to a turnover in favor of the Thunder.

As emotions flared, Billups made contact with Schwab, resulting in a technical foul. His continued protest earned him another technical foul and an automatic ejection. The Thunder capitalized on the situation, tying the game at 109-109 with two free throws and eventually securing the victory with a jump shot by Jalen Williams.

Post-game comments from Billups and Brogdon reflected frustration with the referee’s decision. Billups emphasized the team’s readiness to call a timeout, while Brogdon highlighted the referee’s reluctance to grant it, noting physical contact and frustration on the court.

Crew chief Bill Kennedy explained that the referee’s position obstructed the view and ability to hear Billups’ timeout request, leading to the continuation of the play and subsequent technical fouls.

While the Portland Trail Blazers pursue a protest, historical precedent suggests a slim chance of success, with only six granted protests in NBA history. The more probable outcome may involve Billups facing an automatic fine for criticizing the officials, as the league typically addresses such disputes through monetary penalties rather than overturning game results.
