Jrue Holiday Trade: Celtics Acquire Guard from Trail Blazers in Exchange for Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and Draft Picks

The Portland Trail Blazers have officially sent guard Jrue Holiday packing to the Boston Celtics, in a trade that includes Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, a 2024 first-round pick sourced from the Golden State Warriors, and an unprotected 2029 first-round pick from Boston. This move, confirmed by the team on Sunday, marks the latest chapter in the Blazers’ restructuring efforts following their trade of Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks. Holiday’s stint in Portland was never intended to be long-term, as the team has set its sights on building around their young guards: Scoot Henderson, Anfernee Simons, and Shaedon Sharpe.

Holiday had made it known that Boston was high on his list of preferred destinations, and the Celtics managed to outbid teams from both the Eastern and Western Conferences for his services. The Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat had also expressed interest in the five-time All-Defensive guard, but it was ultimately the Celtics who secured his talents. Despite Holiday having just one year remaining on his current contract, reports suggest that Boston is considering a long-term commitment to the guard.

The addition of Holiday promises to make an immediate impact on the Celtics, effectively filling the void left by Marcus Smart, who was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in the offseason. Holiday’s presence in the backcourt alongside Derrick White, an All-Defensive honoree from the previous season, is poised to bolster the Celtics’ defensive capabilities significantly.

Meanwhile, for the Trail Blazers, the acquisition of assets continues to be a central theme following the blockbuster Lillard trade to Milwaukee. In exchange for Lillard, Portland has secured a noteworthy roster of talent, including Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams, Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, three first-round picks, and two pick swaps. This impressive haul is a stark turnaround from a market that initially appeared limited, with the Miami Heat’s offer looming as one of the few contenders. The front office’s ambition shows no signs of waning, with reports from Wojnarowski indicating that while Portland intends to retain Williams, Brogdon has generated considerable interest and could be a valuable trade asset to further enhance the Blazers’ future prospects.
