How Much Does an Authentic Basketball Weigh?

NBA basketballs typically weigh 21 to 22 ounces, or 1.3 to 1.4 pounds, or 588 to 616 grams. The difference will only be about half an ounce, or 14 to 15 grams, depending on the amount of air in the ball or the pressure to which it is filled.

A standard NBA basketball has a mass of 0.625 kg, a diameter of 9 inches (22.86cm), and should be inflated to between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds per square inch.

International basketballs for men’s play (FIBA: Molten Size 7) have a circumference of 78 centimeters and 30.7 inches. In women’s international play, the maximum size is 74 centimeters (29 inches).

Suitable size for a Basketball

Depending on the ages of the participants, a basketball’s circumference might vary by as much as 80% and still be suitable for use in play. While the typical ball used in the NBA is designated as a Size 7, junior players may begin with a ball that weighs as little as 8oz, or around 225 grams.

However, there are rules concerning basketball weight in all major leagues, including the NBA, WNBA, NCAA (college basketball), and the International Basketball Federation. Of course, if you’re not playing the game at a world-class level, where the regulations are less strictly policed, you can use a ball of any of the above sizes.

WNBA Basketball size and weight:

Weight: 18-20 oz

Maximum Circumference: 29 inches

Weight: 20-23 oz (567-650 grams)

Must-follow rules for Basketball dimensions

The most visible one is the pressure of the air within the ball, which, when it is correctly inflated, causes it to rebound so high but also uniformly.

The more pressure within the ball, the harder its external surfaces will be, and the more it will be able to bounce.

Many basketball players will also attest to the fact that it may be very challenging to catch and dribble a ball that is under-inflated because it will move more slowly, while an over-inflated ball can result in serious injury by trapping your fingers.

We have composed a size chart for suitable weight and circumference:

Size 1     16 inches             8 ounces

Size 3     22 inches             10 ounces

Size 4     25.5 inches         14 ounces

Size 5     27.5 inches         17 ounces

Size 6     28.5 inches         20 oz

Size 7     29.5 inches         22 oz
