How many games are in the NBA season?

Games NBA

The NBA is the professional basketball league in North America, founded in 1946 as the BAA (Basketball Association of America). Later, it merged with the NBL (National Basketball League) at the start of the 1949–50 season and adopted its current name, and over time, the number of teams and games increased in each NBA season.

Since its foundation, the NBA has become the ultimate goal of young basketball players around the globe. They work hard to succeed in the sport and join the league. Each team plays 82 games in an NBA season, which makes it lengthy and demanding for every player because sometimes players have to play back-to-back matches during their extensive travels throughout the States and Canada.

Games in the NBA

A regular NBA season features 82 games per team. However, the only exception was in 2020, due to the COVID pandemic, when it was cut short to 72 games per NBA team. There are 30 teams in the NBA, and they are divided into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. They compete to manage a place in the playoffs.

The 82-game system was introduced in 1967–68 with 12 teams competing for the title. Subsequently, more franchises joined the league.

Throughout the season, a team plays 82 games, 41 away from home and 41 at home. Meanwhile, a single NBA season features 1230 games in five months.

Games in the NBA Playoffs

The top teams compete in the playoffs after the end of the regular season. The playoffs are the final competition of the NBA season. A total of 16 teams compete in the playoffs, eight from each conference. A best-of-seven elimination system is used in the playoffs. The team that wins four games advances to the next round, as two teams lock horns seven times.

A team could play 28 games during the playoffs, assuming each round consists of seven games. Meanwhile, NBA championships require teams to play a minimum of 60 games, and 16 games are required to win.

NBA Starts and Finishes

The NBA season usually begins in October and lasts through mid-April. Meanwhile, a few days after, the new play-in tournament begins, followed by the main playoff tournament, which ends by the end of May. The Finals take place in June.
