Houston Rockets Targeting Former Celtics Duo Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline

As the NBA trade deadline approaches on February 8, the Houston Rockets, led by coach Ime Udoka, are making strategic moves to bolster their roster. Reports indicate that the Rockets are eyeing two former Boston Celtics players, showing a keen interest in guard Malcolm Brogdon from the Portland Trail Blazers and big man Robert Williams, who is currently “definitely available” for trade.

While the Rockets are not targeting Celtics All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the potential acquisition of Brogdon and Williams could bring valuable experience and skill to Houston’s lineup. The interest in Brogdon is particularly noteworthy, considering his connection to Udoka’s coaching staff during his time in Boston.

Brogdon, although not directly coached by Udoka, collaborated with several Celtics assistants who have since joined Udoka in Houston. Despite a slight dip in shooting percentage, Brogdon’s scoring and assist averages have increased this season, making him an attractive option for the young Rockets team.

On the other hand, Williams, who enjoyed a standout season under Udoka in 2021-22, showcasing impressive stats with almost a double-double per game and solid shot-blocking abilities, is currently sidelined due to a knee injury. The Rockets, armed with significant cap space, might view Williams as a potential asset for the upcoming seasons if they believe Udoka can unlock his full potential.

For former Celtics players like Williams and Brogdon, this season has presented its challenges, including injuries and team transitions. However, the looming  NBA trade deadline offers the prospect of a fresh start with new teams. While a return to the Celtics seems unlikely, both players could find themselves in new colours as the Rockets explore strategic moves to strengthen their lineup. The Celtics, currently holding the NBA’s best record, are watching these developments with interest.
