Clippers Drop to 0-4 Despite Familiar Fourth-Quarter Rally with James Harden

The Los Angeles Clippers, now 0-4 since acquiring former MVP guard James Harden, experienced a sense of déjà vu in their recent game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Much like a scenario last season with Russell Westbrook, the Clippers faced the Grizzlies without key players, including star point guard Ja Morant. Despite an impressive fourth-quarter comeback, the Clippers fell short, mirroring a situation that had sparked a turnaround in the previous season.

In the 2021-2022 season, the Clippers overcame a losing streak by staging a come-from-behind victory against the Grizzlies. This season, history seemed to repeat itself as the Grizzlies, missing Morant and several role players, once again built a double-digit lead entering the fourth quarter. The Clippers managed to erase the deficit, tying the game at 84 with a 16-5 run to start the final quarter.

However, the similarities ended there for the Clippers. Desmond Bane’s crucial nine points, combined with solid plays from reserve big men David Roddy and Bismack Biyombo, secured a 105-101 win for the Grizzlies, marking only their second victory of the season. The Clippers’ record with James Harden now stands at 0-4, reminiscent of their challenging start with Westbrook in the previous season.

Harden faced notable struggles in his fourth game with the Clippers, shooting 4-of-12 for 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. More concerning, the Clippers lost by 28 points during the 29 minutes Harden played, contrasting with a 24-point lead during the 19 minutes he sat. Across the four games, the Clippers have a negative point differential of 67 in Harden’s minutes, underscoring the challenges they face with the star guard on the court.

Clippers coach Ty Lue emphasized the team’s desire for Harden to be more assertive, urging him to play freely. “Just play, do your thing,” Lue stated after the game. “If you’re doing too much, we’ll let you know.” Harden, who expressed his individualistic playing style upon joining the team, is averaging nine shots in approximately 31 minutes per game. Recognizing his defensive limitations, the Clippers hope for Harden to showcase elite offensive prowess to justify significant playing time.
