NBA Legend Shaq's Surprising Jersey Retirement by Orlando Magic

NBA Legend Shaq’s reaction on jersey retirement stated, that he never imagined the Magic would honor him like this. Before the Orlando Magic retired his jersey, he shared why this moment meant so much. Even though LSU, the Lakers, and the Miami Heat already celebrated him, this one feels extra special.

“Out of all the ceremonies, this is the most exciting,” he shared on “Inside the NBA.” “At LSU, I expected it. … With the Lakers, I pushed for it because I wanted my name up there. But here in Orlando, I played for four years, made it to the Finals once, and was inducted into the ring of honor, and since no one else had their jersey retired, I never thought this day would come. It means everything.”

“And there have been so many great players here — Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, T-Mac, Nick, and Scott. Being the first is a real honor,” he added.

Orlando Magic Memories

Shaq didn’t anticipate Orlando retiring his jersey number. But looking back, it was about time they recognized his contributions.

As the team’s top pick in 1992, Shaq helped put Orlando on the basketball map. With his strength and skill, he took the young team to the top, even challenging powerhouse teams like Michael Jordan‘s Bulls.

By his third year, Magic made it to the NBA Finals and set a franchise record with 62 wins the next season. Though he only played for four years, Shaq is grateful for the chance to kick-start his NBA journey here. And it seems the Magic feel the same way.

NBA Legend Shaq’s Legacy

Right after a tough loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shaq’s jersey was retired at the Kia Center. It’s the first jersey retirement in the franchise’s 35-year history.

The loyal Magic fans stayed to see it, along with current and former team members, including Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson, and Coach Brian Hill.

“You know, they say: Never forget where you come from. And my journey began here. I’ve mostly lived here all my life, and the fans and community have always been supportive. I never thought this day would come,” Shaq reflected.
