Jayson Tatum’s Controversial Ejection Spurs Celtics’ Victory Over Sixers

Jayson Tatum didn’t see action in the final quarter of the Boston Celtics’ triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers, and it wasn’t due to the Celtics dominating the game in the absence of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Instead, he found himself ejected in the waning moments of the third quarter after disputing a call.

According to Tatum, it felt like the referees had their sights set on him. Sharing his thoughts on the incident, he expressed surprise and disagreement with the decision: “I was extremely surprised. Y’all saw what happened. Might not know what I said, but whatever I said doesn’t matter at this point. I don’t agree with that. One of the assistant coaches was there with me, [he] doesn’t agree. But it doesn’t matter. It’s like the ref’s word against ours. When they throw you out, they throw you out, even if I was right.”

Tatum reflected on the referees’ readiness to eject him, stating, “They [were] ready. They [were] ready to throw me out. Did I cuss? No, I didn’t. I didn’t say a cuss word.” He emphasized that he hadn’t used offensive language or gestures during the incident. Tatum expressed disbelief at being ejected, considering he’d witnessed more extreme behaviors allowed to continue without consequences in the past.

The sequence leading to his ejection involved Tatum being trapped by the Sixers’ defense and a subsequent foul on Robert Covington. As Tatum engaged with the referees during a review, a second technical foul resulted in his ejection. He had already received a technical in the first quarter. Despite the controversy, Tatum concluded the game with 21 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Tatum’s absence in the final quarter didn’t derail the Celtics’ victory, with Al Horford and Payton Pritchard stepping up. Coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged the passion Tatum displayed, stating, “I like some of that. I think some of that is important. You don’t want it to get in the way of winning, but I think that type of passion, and caring about it, I’d rather see that than nothing at all.”

Despite the drama, the Celtics’ win propelled them to an impressive 15-4 record, maintaining their top position in the league
