Former Celtics Star Isaiah Thomas Set to Join Jazz G League Squad, Eyes NBA Return

According to a report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania on Tuesday, former NBA star Isaiah Thomas is taking a step towards a potential return to the league by joining the Salt Lake City Stars, the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz.

Despite facing setbacks in recent years, Thomas remains determined to make a comeback to the NBA, and his decision to join the Stars underscores his commitment to that goal.

The last time Thomas appeared in NBA action was during the 2021-22 season, where he had brief stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and the Charlotte Hornets, playing a total of 22 games across these teams.

Former Boston Celtics executive Danny Ainge, who is now associated with the Jazz organization, played a pivotal role in Thomas’ career during his time with the Celtics. Ainge traded for Thomas from the Phoenix Suns just before the 2015 trade deadline, and thus, he possesses an intimate knowledge of Thomas’ capabilities on the court.

Isaiah Thomas enjoyed his most successful years with the Celtics between 2014-15 and 2016-17, during which he earned two All-Star selections (in 2016 and 2017). Notably, he averaged an impressive 28.9 points per game during the 2016-17 season and garnered recognition as an MVP candidate, finishing fifth in the voting that year. Additionally, Thomas secured a spot on the All-NBA Second Team for his stellar performance.

However, Thomas’ career trajectory was marred by injuries following his standout season in 2016-17, leading to stints with multiple teams over subsequent seasons.

Given Thomas’ illustrious past and his continued determination to return to the NBA, many fans and observers alike hope to witness his triumphant comeback to the league soon.
