Former Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Guides NBA Players in Philanthropy Role

Former Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has found a new calling as the executive director of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the NBA Players Union. Since taking on this role in November 2022, Rawlings-Blake has been instrumental in coordinating and promoting the charitable endeavours of NBA players, fostering a sense of community impact both on and off the court.

Philanthropy Initiatives and Impactful Partnerships

Under Rawlings-Blake’s leadership, the NBPA Foundation has engaged in impactful partnerships, notably joining forces with Team Rubicon, a veteran-led global humanitarian organization. The collaboration aims to provide rapid response matching grant funds, allowing players to contribute up to $25,000 to support non-profit disaster relief efforts. This initiative reflects the foundation’s commitment to addressing pressing issues and making a positive impact on communities affected by natural disasters.

Art Dela Cruz, CEO of Team Rubicon, acknowledges Rawlings-Blake’s significant role in elevating the organization’s work and impact. Rawlings-Blake’s dedication to fostering community engagement and her position on Team Rubicon’s board of advisors have played a pivotal role in expanding the foundation’s outreach.

Transition from Politics to Philanthropy

Seven years after concluding her mayoral tenure in Baltimore, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings has seamlessly transitioned into the philanthropic realm, leveraging her extensive experience in public service. Her political background, including serving as the secretary of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 to 2016, has proven to be an asset in addressing the needs and concerns of communities impacted by disasters.

Rawlings-Blake’s journey includes founding a consulting firm, SRB & Associates, and representing rapper Travis Scott in 2021 after a tragic incident at his annual festival. When the opportunity to lead the NBPA Foundation arose, Rawlings-Blake seized it, recognizing the chance to channel her skills and talent into making a positive difference in communities across the country.

NBPA Foundation’s “Business of Giving” Program

One notable achievement during Rawlings-Blake’s tenure has been the foundation’s hosting of the “Business of Giving” certificate program at UCLA. This two-day program, held in September, provided players and their charitable organizations with insights on refining their mission statements and deepening their societal impact. The event featured former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the closing speaker, emphasizing the intersection of sports and social activism.

Future Endeavors and Philanthropic Voice

Rawlings-Blake envisions future projects for the NBPA Foundation that involve encouraging civic engagement, advocating for voting rights, and contributing to social justice reform. In her role, she aims to help NBA players find their philanthropic voice, drawing parallels between her current work and her past experiences in engaging constituents during her mayoral tenure.

Charles “Choo” Smith Jr., chairman of the National Basketball Retired Players Association, applauds Rawlings-Blake’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of alignment between her mission and core values with those of the NBA players.

A Fulfilling Role in Philanthropy

While Rawlings-Blake doesn’t rule out a return to politics, she expresses fulfilment in her current role, emphasizing her initial interest in public service to use her skills and talents for community betterment. As she continues to guide NBA players in their philanthropic journeys, Rawlings-Blake remains dedicated to making a lasting impact on both local and global communities.
