Chicago Bulls Release Quenton Jackson and Sign Seasoned Big Man

The Chicago Bulls released Quenton Jackson and made an interesting move in the lead-up to the new season by announcing the signing of veteran big man Derrick Favors to a training camp contract. This addition raises eyebrows because the Bulls already have two traditional big men in their rotation—starting with Nikola Vucevic and backed up by center Andre Drummond.

A Return to the NBA

Derrick Favors, the robust big man, was the third overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, originally chosen by the New Jersey Nets. However, his tenure with the Nets was short-lived as he was traded during his rookie season to the Utah Jazz, where he experienced his most successful years. He spent a decade in Salt Lake City, posting averages of 11.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.

After stints with New Orleans and Oklahoma City, Favors was out of the league last season. He briefly signed a 10-day contract with Atlanta but did not get the opportunity to play.

Other Moves

In addition to the signing of Favors, the team also brought in Kahlil Whitney, a forward with hometown ties to Kentucky. Standing at 6-foot-6, he played last season for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League.

The Bulls decided to waive guard Quenton Jackson. While his time in Chicago was short, Jackson made a memorable impact with a spectacular, in-your-face slam against the Milwaukee Bucks just last week.
